You Gave Him a “New Leash on Life”

When K9s For Warriors was founded 15 years ago in 2011, it wasn’t a national organization – it was a promise made by founder Shari Duval to Veterans struggling in silence, and to rescue dogs waiting for a second chance.

That same year, Navy Veteran Charlie became the very first Warrior to be paired with a Service Dog.

Today, as we celebrate more than 1,300 life-changing pairings and more than 2,500 dogs rescued, Charlie’s story stands as a powerful reminder of what your support makes possiblenot just in a single moment, but across a lifetime.

Charlie served nearly three decades in the U.S. Navy, from 1982 to 2010. As a Military Police officer, he deployed around the world, visiting more than 60 countries and completing two tours in Iraq. He joined the military to serve his country and to see the worldbut what he experienced during his service would follow him home in ways he never expected.

“My time in the service had a huge impact on my quality of life… to the point I wanted to give up,” Charlie shares.

When Charlie returned home, the weight of his experiences didn’t fade…instead, it grew heavier. The structure of

military life was gone, replaced by long days filled with anxiety, anger, and isolation. “I was very angry,” he recalls. “I started drinking more and pushed people away. I alienated my family and my friends.”

For Charlie, like so many Veterans, the invisible wounds of war became overwhelming. Eventually, he was diagnosed with PTSD. In 2011, his doctor suggested something Charlie had never considered before: a Service Dog.

Skeptical but searching for anything that might help him reclaim his life, Charlie reached out to a small, grassroots organizationK9s For Warriors.

At the time, it was operating out of Shari’s home garage, fueled by determination, compassion and the belief that dogs and Veterans could save each other.

That November, Charlie met Slider – and from the very beginning, something shifted. Slider wasn’t just a dog, he became Charlie’s anchor. His steady presence created space where there had once been chaos.

“I started doing things I wasn’t doing before,” Charlie says. “I was getting out more and spending time with my family again.”

The panic attacks didn’t disappear overnight – but now, Charlie didn’t face them alone.

“When I would start to spiral, Slider would nudge me with that big paw of his,” he remembers. “He’d bring me back.”

At home, Charlie began rebuilding the life he thought he had lost. With his wife and their two daughters by his side, the bond within their family grew stronger. The man who once felt disconnected and lost was finding his way back one step at a time.

Slider wasn’t just a companion, he was a lifeline. For more than 12 years, Slider stayed by Charlie’s side through every high and low.

“He was my cornerstone,” Charlie says. “He kept me grounded and was with me every step of the way – from beginning to end.”

When Slider passed away at 15 years old, the loss was profound. It wasn’t just the loss of a pet, it was the loss of a partner who had helped save his life. And yet, even in that grief, Charlie knew he wasn’t alone and had the support of the organization.

“The K9s For Warriors team was so sympathetic,” he recalls. “And then they asked me if I wanted another Service Dog.”

In 2024, Charlie returned to K9s For Warriors and was paired with his second Service Dog Lady Cameo, a devoted and joyful Labrador Retriever with a personality all her own.

“She brings joy out of me,” Charlie says. “She brings me out of some really dark places and gives me hope each and every day.”

For Charlie, Lady Cameo represents something powerful: not just healing, but continuity. Proof that the journey doesn’t end…it evolves.

“This is my second Service Dog,” he says. “And I would give my right arm for them.”

Because he knows firsthand what these dogs do – not just for Veterans, but for the families who love them.

“Service Dogs help prevent suicides, reduce medication and give Veterans the tools to function in everyday life,” Charlie explains. “They give us a chance to be part of society again.”

As K9s For Warriors marks 15 years of transforming lives, Charlie reflects on how far the organization – and its mission – has come. “I think Shari’s heart would be bursting with joy to see what this has become,” he says.

From one pairing in a garage to more than 1,300 across the country, the impact is undeniable. But for Charlie, it’s deeply personal, because behind every number is a story like his – a life reclaimed, a family restored and a future made possible.

“To friends like you,” Charlie says, “we need to take care of our Veterans because of the sacrifices they’ve made. Please continue giving your support, because you have a huge impact. Not just on the Veteran, but on their family too.”

Your support gave Charlie a new leash on life…twice. And today, more Veterans are finding hope, healing and the courage to move forward.

Every day, thanks to our incredible supporters, we are working to ensure every Veteran knows they are not alone. Your support carries Shari’s legacy forward – helping us reach more Veterans, rescue more dogs and restore more families for the next 15 years and beyond.
