“I was struggling,” recalls David, a Marine Veteran who was diagnosed with PTSD after his time serving. “I was on 24 pills a day; the pills were killing me.”
While David found a temporary fix with medication, he knew he didn’t want to be on them forever. His goal was to reduce his medication intake, get out of the house and enjoy his life. He also wanted to be a better father and husband.
After learning about K9s For Warriors, David realized that a Service Dog could make a difference in his life by restoring his confidence. He arrived at K9s in 2019 and met Bert, a lovable Yellow Labrador Retriever. As the two bonded, David says he began looking forward to life again. He felt he found a long-lasting tool for his PTSD.
“There is a way out besides the pills, besides suicide. There’s light,” he shared. “K9s For Warriors saves two lives. They save rescue dogs, and they save Veteran’s lives.”
K9s For Warriors provides highly trained Service Dogs to military Veterans struggling with the invisible wounds of war. We provide the dog at no cost to the Veteran. “I’m living proof your donations make a difference. Before K9s For Warriors, I was in a dark place, but thanks to my Service Dog Bert, I’ve got my independence back,” said David.
David and Bert have been battle buddies for five unforgettable years. He encourages fellow Veterans who are in the place he was before K9s to reach out for help.
