Today, we celebrate the loving, hardworking and special dogs that support many Americans with disabilities. September 20 is National Service Dog Day. On this day in 2023, the unanimous passing of a historic bipartisan resolution designating September 20 as National Service Dog Day each year.
The day highlights the vital work Service Dogs provide for Veterans struggling after military service.
The resolution notes that Service Dogs have been providing such assistance since 1929.
K9s For Warriors has proudly paired more than 1,000 Veterans with a lifesaving Service Dog. We have also rescued more than 2,000 dogs and given them a second chance at life. At K9s, we like to say we are in the business of saving two lives – a dog and a Veteran.
National Service Dog Day reminds us of why K9s For Warriors started 13 years ago.
Our late founder, Shari Duval, believed in the healing power of dogs and how they could save Veteran lives. Shari’s vision paved the way for K9s For Warriors to become the leading provider of trained Service Dogs to military Veterans with PTSD, traumatic brain injury and military sexual trauma. Shari sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2021 – but her legacy remains – restoring hope and independence for Veterans every day.
“My Service Dog means independence and peace of mind,” said Army Veteran Martin about his Service Dog, Skonce.
“It’s another tool in your toolbox to help you cope with issues a lot of us deal with.”
“I have made such a bond with this fellow,” said Army Veteran Tim, who was paired with Chips in March 2024. “He is my best friend. I love him so much and he has changed my life. He has saved my life.”
National Service Dog Day recognizes all types of Service Dogs. Roughly 61 million Americans are living with disabilities, according to the CDC. That’s about 26 percent of the population. The resolution states there are tens of thousands of Service Dogs estimated to be working in the United States today for Americans with a wide range of challenges, including – epilepsy, visual, hearing and mobility impairments, and other disabilities.
Miami-based Veteran Emir served in the Air Force and Army, which left him needing three spinal surgeries. Emir struggled with daily tasks because of his disability. His doctor gave him a cane, which Emir says felt like defeat. His perspective changed when he came to K9s and met Artemis. The Yellow Lab helped him get out of bed in the morning. To Emir, Artemis was better than a cane. Over time, Artemis helped Emir deal with mental health issues he didn’t even know he was experiencing.
“Artemis became my lifeline,” said Emir. “We have become a seamless team. He understands my needs without any words.”
The National Service Dog Day resolution was introduced by U.S. Senators John Tester (D-MT) and Jerry Moran (R-KS), and Congressmen Mike Bost (R-IL) and Mark Takano (D-CA). This is proof that Veterans with mental health struggles are on the minds of lawmakers. K9s For Warriors works closely with legislators to push policy-level reform for military Veterans and Service Dogs.
Army Veteran Ryan said, “It gives you a battle buddy. Someone that’s always there for you. Scout always loves me no matter how bad her day has been. She is not just a dog, she is my partner.”

Roughly 20 Veterans take their own lives each day. Our Service Dog and Warrior pairs form an incredible connection. The loyalty, love and support that our wonderful dogs provide means so much to these Veterans. The connection is lifesaving. Now, we can celebrate Service Dogs with a special day just for them.
